The Emotional Compass

15 03 2013

ImageAnd just like that, his opinion changed. Rob Portman, Ohio senator and politician who was even in the running for being the right-hand man to Mitt Romney in the previous presidential run, has just recently decided that he does not stand by his previous conviction that “same-sex marriage” should not be allowed, all because his son just came out of the “closet.”  “It allowed me to think of this issue from a new perspective, and that’s of a Dad who loves his son a lot and wants him to have the same opportunities that his brother and sister would have — to have a relationship like Jane and I have had for over 26 years,” said Senator Portman.

What is the real problem here? We must realize that this man was not standing by his convictions; he was choosing his opinions all on the base of his emotions. As Jiminy Cricket said, “Let your conscience be your guide,” we see that this also is the mindset in today’s society, and our consciences strictly becomes what our emotions tells us is right. What happens when people lose jobs? Some may start a life of theft. In hard times many, instead of going to the Lord, decide to take their own life. Just think of the problems that are conceived when we let our emotions take over. We all tend to lose our clear sight when our emotions get in the way, they tend to be our guide, and they tend to lead us like a compass.

In our life as Disciples of Christ, we see that we are to follow our Savior Jesus and do His will, “For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome.   For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith.” His words are not burdensome…They are not hard for us! God is not just ruling over us some nonsense judgments; they are for our own good! (Deut. 10:12-13, 2 Tim. 3:16)

Will that still make us not be emotional? No! Hard times will come and our sound judgment will be tested, but what will we do? Will we so quickly flee from the pure truth of the Word and just go with “the flow” of society? Or will we stand firm even when our emotions tell us otherwise? Let us always remember these words when we feel like our compass leading our life is going in the direction of our fragile opinions, “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.” (Romans 12:2)

What Happened To Salt And Pepper?

6 04 2011

Flavor…A magnificent thing that we as humans have been blessed to taste!  Whether it be salt, pepper, sugar, cinnamon etc… without one of these, life would been rather dull. And as years go by, we have discovered exciting and exotic new flavors! It appears as more years go by, the best is yet to come! Right?  Wrong!…

Senomyx. A flavoring company set before high companies to improve our chemical flavors. But with recent research there has been results showing that Senomyx uses the cells from Aborted Babies and Rats for taste results! http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC123709/ (please copy and paste this to check out the information).  Most of this info is rather, how do  I put this?…Too smart for the likes of me.  But if you skim through it you will come to realize what they are talking about.

Now, they have not yet put it in our food.  But the fact that they are using unborn children that was unable to receive the gift of life for the source of our taste buds, It should be enough info to make your stomach turn! What kind of evil would promote such an abomination?  I’ll tell you!  Pepsi, Nestle, and Kraft Cheese,  That’s Who!  http://www.cogforlife.org/senomyxalert.htm (Please do the same here)

Now when this attention was brought to these 3 companies, that the company that they sponsor are making these horrible experiments for them…they did nothing about the situation!  Now me and my family are not the type of family that boycotts a company too often (and those who do. I humbly tip my hat to you).  But when there is a kind of abomination like this that we can make a difference for,  I believe it is our duty to do what is necessary!

Sometimes these boycotts are  in vain.  But not this one.  When Campbell’s Soups were shown the problems that were before them, they immediately stepped down from Senomyx in order to avoid any boycotting.  So if we all make this step to boycott Pepsi Products, Nestle Products And Craft Products, Lord willing, it will not be in vain! Then we can go back to real seasonings like salt and pepper.

p.s. It looks like I will be eating a lot of Campells soup and drinking a lot of coca-cola for quite awhile!

Captain Of Your Soul?

15 03 2011

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the Horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find, me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,I am the master of my fate:
I am the captain of my soul”

This is the second half of the  popular poem “Invictus” By William Earnest Henley

You’ve most likely heard this poem, whether by reading it, or by maybe a tv show that quoted it, or possibly the new film titled “Invictus” starring Morgan freeman as Nelson Mandela.  As you have probably noticed society has come to love this poem.  Mostly for the last section, though…which is the controversial bit of information.

“I Am The Master Of My Fate: I Am The Captain Of My Soul”  now, the world enjoys and quotes this area of the poem for obvious reasons.  It says we don’t need anyone but ourselves to control our own life…we need no help from God.  It is a sad thing when we hear about how many people think they can get through life without help from our heavenly Father.  But the real question is, Who Is The Captain Of Your Soul?

Unfortunately, sometimes we find ourselves thinking our own ideas are better than our Lord’s.  But if we look at John 14:6 “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me”. As it says here, we are to obey Jesus’ path and it also says in Proverbs 3:5&6 “Trust in the LORD with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;”.  So we are not meant to go by what we think is right or what our Spouse, Or Boss or parents or anyone else says if it goes against God’s Word. We are to obey His commands and follow His path.  Because He is the Captain of our Souls.

Follow The Footsteps of Jesus part 4…Resist Temptaion

3 03 2011

In the last several weeks we have

been looking at 1 Peter 2:21.  And have been looking at the way we can follow in Christ’s Footsteps.  We have already looked at “Being A Servant”, “Having A Heart Of Compassion” & “Being Evangelistic”.  And ALL 3 of those are ways we can follow Jesus’ steps, but they are all worthless if we can’t “Resist Temptation”.  Which will be my last point in these series of blogs.

In Matthew 4:1-11 It tell us of Jesus and the Devil in the wilderness.  And in this account it says that the Devil kept persisting Jesus to commit sin.  But Jesus would not give into temptation, He quotes scripture to the devil to show him he that He is commanded not to commit these sins.  We can take Jesus’ example here.  We must know our Bible by studying and reading it daily.  So that when we are tempted we know what we are supposed to do and that we can inspire ourselves so that we no longer want to commit those sins. But we also read here that Jesus flat out tell the devil to leave Him. Whenever we are tempted we should tell the devil to leave us.  And we must not even get in those situations that would possibly cause us to stumble. 12Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. 13No temptation has overtaken you but such as is common to man; and God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will provide the way of escape also, so that you will be able to endure it. 14Therefore, my beloved, flee from idolatry.-1 Cor 10

but as unfortunate as it is we will be tempted, but that is because God has given us a choice in life. e can chose to follow him, or the tempter. He has given us the free choice to do want we want…But their will be consequences if you chose wrong. So whenever we are tempted it is going to be up to us to avoid those temptations.  But if it gets to hard for you to overcome these temptations, we will have each other.Brothers and Sisters, we can go to one another in our time of need and ask for help.  I mentioned that the consequences would be bad if we chose wrong…But just think about the Rewards if we resist temptation.  We will live forever with Jesus in His mansion for All eternity!  And that is the best thing of all!

I hope these 4 lessons have been helpful for you.  I also hope you will be able to take them with you through your walk through life!

Bruno Mars’ Dark Side(Sheep or Wolf?)

24 02 2011

It is a rule in our house hold that whenever you come upon a song you like, before purchasing it you must first look up the lyrics.  Now I have found it helpful to go to http://www.pluggedin.com and go to their music section, and somewhat recently i looked up Bruno Mars.  A some what teeny bopper singer who is popular with both adults and kids.  Known for his sappy love song his best known are “Just the way you are” which is about a boy telling his girl how perfect she is, and his second is “Grenade” which deals with a boy pleading with his girlfriend to love him saying things like “i’d jump in front of a train for you”.  And with these corny love songs “pluggedin” has been presently surprised to see a new rising star with such clean lyrics (based on his first two singles).  But, recently I looked up his entire cd on “pluggedin”.  I was surprised to read that his cd was full of sexual perversion.  He came out with rather clean songs and got young kids to be his fan, then filled his cd full of junk like that.  They described Bruno as being the perfect example of a “Wolf in Sheep’s clothing”.

Unfortunately we as Christians will face the same problem. As it says in   Matthew 7:15-16 “15Beware of the false prophets, who come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly are ravenous wolves. 16“You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they?”.  As it says here we must watch out for those men and woman who appear to be wise and take you in lovingly.  But then try and possibly brain wash you of your biblical beliefs that you know the Bible commands you.  This doesn’t mean we can’t trust any person who is loving or shows kindness to us, That’s what Christians are supposed to do.  It also doesn’t mean that if someone tries to tell us something we are doing wrong in our walk through life that we shouldn’t take their advice and go to the scriptures ourselves and read it.  We just must be on the lookout for those “Wolves in sheep’s clothing” that will turn us away from God’s Word.

But we must also make sure that we ourselves are not becoming those type of people. 1 Thess 5:11 tells us, “Therefore encourage one another and build up one another, just as you also are doing”.  Instead of trying to cause others to stumble let us try and build each other up as it say here. and let’s avoid those people in our life that will cause us to stumble (like Mr. Mars)

Follow The Footsteps Of Jesus part 3…Being A Servant

17 02 2011

Who do you know that is a servant?

I would like for you to take a moment and think about someone in your life that is a hard worker.  Whether it be someone at your church, someone in your family, or a long time friend.  We all know someone who goes the extra mile or two, to help you or someone in need. I’m thinking of several right now.  Let us look at Jesus as an example.  Of course there is His dying for us that shows the best way to be a servant.  but seeing that we probably won’t be in that situation any time soon, let us look at the way we can be a servant…

In John 13:3-12,  it tells us that Jesus got on his knees and washed His disciples feet.  Would we stoop that low to clean someones feet like Jesus did?  If we are striving to follow Jesus’ foot steps ,  “21For you have been called for this purpose, since Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example for you to follow in His steps,”-1 Peter 2:21.  Then we must strive to always be a better servant!

We are commanded in Galatians 5:13b-14, “but through love serve one another. For the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in the statement, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.'”  If we can learn to go that extra mile for others by…visiting the sick in hospitals, making meals for those who are going through hard times, cleaning for those who are physically unable to, or even just being there for a friend who is not doing good, then we are truly being servants like Christ.

But we shouldn’t do it for our own image. If we are doing it to look good we are doing it for the wrong reasons  “3But when you give to the poor, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing, 4so that your giving will be in secret; and your Father who sees what is done in secret will reward you”.-Matthew 6.  Therefore we must do it with out making a fuss, we must do it because we want to help others in they’re time of need.

If we do all these things, striving to be a servant to others without making a big deal about our selves, then someday we too, might have the servant attitude Jesus want’s us to have!

Hypocrite

10 02 2011

About 2 months ago I was having one of those days…

My younger brothers were out of control, I had a head ache, I didn’t get enough sleep the night before, the house needed cleaning, and on top of it I had a greek quiz in a couple hours that I wasn’t ready for.  Then out of no where a huge crash came from the kitchen…My little sister had accidentally dropped a plate that had shattered everywhere.  Not a big deal right? but unfortunately I made the stupid mistake of freaking out and chewing her out to be more careful.  First of all I made several mistakes right here. The 1st…I did not have a godly attitude for a simple mistake, but I won’t be talking about this one (if you want to learn more about this one go to my brother’s Fantastic blog the link will be at the bottom of the page).   But it’s what happened after that was a bigger deal.  Not 20 minutes after we cleaned up everything i found myself in the same place as her, watching as i had let a (more expensive) bowl fall and shatter on the ground.

I found myself in the position of being  a Hypocrite!  It tells us in Matthew 7:1-5. “1Do not judge so that you will not be judged. 2“For in the way you judge, you will be judged; and by your standard of measure, it will be measured to you. 3“Why do you look at the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4“Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ and behold, the log is in your own eye?  5“You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye.”

This doesn’t tell us that we shouldn’t judge others, we are commanded to go to our fellow brother if he is not following God’s commands  .It just tells us that if we have a problem we must get it out of our life before we criticize others with the same problem.  So if we find ourselves telling a brother or sister to not use bad  language, watching kind of movies, telling dirty jokes, hanging with the wrong crowd, or keeping pure thoughts, but we ourselves have the same struggles…God will judge us according to our actions, so we must be sure that when we judge we don’t have a log in our own eye.
